I did update the driver with what they had there for OS 10.12.x (Sierra).Įntered my printer IP in safari and Enabled IPv6. Doesn't come up on the Brother download site. My printer is too old for the CUPS driver, it seems. It's been a week of frustration trying to troubleshoot and figure this problem out and not get nailed for a bunch of $, or scammed. Tried JustAnswer online tech support, they wanted $26, then + $52 and remote access to my computer. Then wanted $130 for tech support to see if they could actually fix it. My service provider did some troubleshooting and tweaked the network name for the 2.4 ghz band. I have an older (2014) Brother J650DW that kept dropping the connection after about 5 minutes. Thanks so much! We just moved and now have our service provider's dual band width router. I hope and pray that this helps anybody else with this issue because, believe me, it is frustrating beyond belief!! I'm not completely sure what fixed it, either disabling airprint or enabling IPv6, and I don't feel like finding out since its working now. It's been 12 hours and it's still connected. Good Lord it was such an amazing feeling. Opened up printers and scanners and wouldn't you know? That little light was green and the status was idle. After changing these settings, the printer restarted and I waited for it to go to sleep and even waited 5 more minutes after that. Then I noticed that IPv6 was disabled, so I went ahead and enabled it. I was running the CUPS driver anyways and I feel that airprint may be what is causing this whole mess.

From here I noticed I could disable airprint and thought I'd give that a try since nothing else was working. Last night I restarted my printer to make sure it was connected, typed in my printer's IP address in the address bar in Chrome. And I don't know about you but I'd like my things to work they way they are intended to (like Macs staying connected to a printer) Called Apple back and they suggested trying a test user account, then booting into safe mode, then going into recovery. Anyways I called Brother and they had me add the printer with the IP number, that worked but then I wasn't able to scan. I even have a Windows partition on my macbook and I was able to connect to the printer even while it was in sleep mode. Called Apple twice, first time they said it was a Brother issue (I have the MFC-J885DW) which I didn't believe because after the printer went to sleep I could print from my phone without any issues.

There can be some mystery/magic involved when dealing with printer drivers and Macs. And one would think that the Airprint driver is the one to choose for wireless printing, but apparently not. I had to add the printer 3 times before the CUPS driver was automatically added instead of the Airprint driver.

On my MacBook Pro Steps 4-7 did not occur. At the bottom of the Add window click the 'Use' button and select Brother (printer name) series CUPS. Select the Brother printer if it isn't already highlighted.Ħ. The next window will say 'Add' at the top.
